Praying for Peace

If you didn’t hear, there was a shooting in Pittsburgh on Saturday morning.  It wasn’t just a shooting that you hear about and forget about.  Three police officers were shot and killed, two other officers were injured.  I feel just awful about it.  Police officers get a lot of flack for the things that they are required to do for their job like writing up tickets and pulling people over for speeding.  This, though, was so very much uncalled for.  Just wrong.

They say that domestic disputes are one of the most dangerous calls an officer can get because they just never know what is waiting for them.  One of the questions that the 911 dispatcher must ask when talking to someone calling in a domestic dispute is whether or not there are any weapons or firearms in the house.  In this case, the caller responded with a “yes” but they are now saying that the 911 operator told the responding officers that there were no weapons or firearms in the house!  If this is true, I’m sure it was a mistake….a huge one but a mistake nonetheless.  Can you imagine the guilt and sorrow that person may be feeling right now?!  It breaks my heart to think that this person may feel that they are responsible for what happened.

Also, one of the officer was actually off duty and passed up the road to his house to go to the scene to help his fellow officers.  This was an absolute ambush on the killer’s part.  Some reports are saying that his mother said that he didn’t realize that it was police officers that he was shooting but come on!  They are in uniform and he was ready….he was wearing a bullet-proof vest and had an AK-47!  He knew exactly what the hell he was doing!  I have no sympathy for him.

There was another shooting in this region last night.  This time it was a few miles from my house.  A woman shot her ex-husband who was a doctor that lots of people around here have seen.  She shot him three times then shot herself after three hours.  I have heard that he died in the OR and she is alive.  Though that information has not been reported yet.

What the hell is going on with people??!!  I just can’t understand what they are thinking, what they gain from doing this.  What do they gain by robbing families of the person/people they love?

It’s just sad and I am praying for peace for the fallen officers and their families.

The worst thing about this whole thing is that in hindsight, there were SO many chances for things to not end up the way they did. So many of the shooter’s family and friends had enough information to predict it (the mother especially shares some blame–who calls 911 to kick a kid out of their house after a fight? Then hides in the basement while her own son shoots hundreds of bullets?). There’s the fact that he shouldn’t have been able to acquire the guns legally in the first place. And, now the 911 dispatcher. So sad.
